NZTE Marine Profile
September 2006:
BACKGROUND INFORMATIONPROFILE: THE NEW ZEALAND MARINE INDUSTRYNew Zealand is an island nation whose people have long had a love affair with the sea. That passion has been the catalyst for a world-class marine industry. The industry's export success and worldwide reputation is built on excellence in grand prix race yacht and superyacht design and construction, as well as sporting success in international yachting regattas from the Olympics to the America's Cup.This success has confirmed that New Zealand has benchmark standards for high performance and advanced technology in the areas of racing technique, boat-building and design, refits, sails, spars, electronics, technology, software and systems. The industry has shown a pioneering spirit and in many cases is at the leading edge of developments and applications for modern materials and techniques. The New Zealand marine industry brand today is synonymous with achievement, flexibility and technologically advanced and innovative design and production processes. This is supported by high quality products and competitive costs of production. New Zealand's recreational marine industry has an annual turnover of NZD$1.5 billion, which equates to a 1.4 percent share of global demand. Research by the Marine Industry Association of New Zealand indicates that the ship building and work boat sector produces additional turnover of NZD$270 million. The New Zealand recreational boat manufacturing and marine products industry earns some NZD$535 million from exports. A good portion of this comes from the sales of finished boats, and New Zealand's reputation is growing as one of the world's leading superyacht building locations. New Zealand Marine Industry The expanding trade in these luxury craft now supports several superyacht boat builders specialising in composite, alloy or steel hull construction. According to the International Council of Marine Industry Associations, New Zealand has a superyacht market share of about 4.6 percent, ranking production at sixth in the world. The Marine Industry Association of New Zealand forecasts that the marine industry will double in size by 2020, growing from turnover of NZD$1.5 billion to almost NZD$3.2 billion dollars in real terms, driven largely by export sales. Further growth in export sales is coming from international boat manufacturers setting up in New Zealand or having their boats built under contract in this country. The industry is not totally focused on the high-tech end of the market. Many yards still practise wooden construction to a very high standard. Others specialise in steel, alloy or composites, while some offer construction and refit services in any material. The Boating Industry Training Organisation and the Marine Industry Association of New Zealand estimate that up to 10,000 people are employed across 1300 marine companies. They cover a range of activities from boat-building to manufacturing components to supply of marine goods and servicing. The New Zealand industry constantly reinvents itself to stay on the leading edge of high-tech development for events like the America's Cup and remains a dynamic force in world markets.
